Environmental Project
"Preservation of Green Areas in the Cordillera Blanca: Combating Indiscriminate Burning and Promoting Reforestation"
Summary
The project’s main objective is the conservation and restoration of green areas in the high Andean zones of the Cordillera Blanca, with a particular focus on combating indiscriminate burning of local vegetation. VR Foundation commits to raising awareness among local communities and promoting concrete reforestation actions through planting native species such as the Quenual and local wild plants, while maintaining cleanup campaigns involving visitors. This effort will be carried out in collaboration with Huascarán National Park and major organizations dedicated to preserving our natural environment, aiming to mitigate the negative impacts of burning and contribute to the preservation of the Cordillera Blanca ecosystem.
Objectives
Combat indiscriminate burning of green areas in the high Andean zones of the Cordillera Blanca, raising awareness about the environmental dangers this practice generates.
Conduct awareness campaigns in nearby communities, promoting the importance of natural resource conservation.
Carry out reforestation days with native species such as Quenual and other local wild plants, collaborating with SERNANP and Huascarán National Park.
Encourage local community participation in ecological preservation and restoration actions.
Recruit volunteers to participate in reforestation activities, educational campaigns, and cleanup efforts.
Justification
The indiscriminate burning of green areas in the Cordillera Blanca has had devastating consequences for the local environment. This practice not only destroys biodiversity but also contributes to soil degradation and alteration of the region’s hydrological cycle. In particular, native species like the Quenual, which are fundamental to ecological balance, are being seriously threatened. VR Foundation, with its mission to care for and preserve the Cordillera Blanca environment, takes an active stance in fighting this problem.
Activities
Awareness Campaigns
Talks and workshops
In nearby communities about the negative effects of burning green areas.
Distribution of educational materials
About sustainable practices and the importance of native species conservation.
Use of local media
(community radio, social networks) to spread conservation and awareness messages.
Reforestation Days
Coordination with SERNANP and Huascarán National Park to identify priority areas for reforestation
Planting of Quenual trees and other local wild species in areas most affected by burning.
Maintenance of planted trees to ensure their growth and adaptation to the environment.
Volunteering and Community Participation
Recruitment of local and regional volunteers to participate in reforestation activities.
Establishment of strategic alliances with other environmental and educational organizations to strengthen the campaign.
Promotion of community participation in caring for planted trees.
What do we expect from this project?
Reduction in the burning of green areas, contributing to the preservation of local biodiversity and the high Andean ecosystem of the Cordillera Blanca.
Restoration of degraded areas, favoring the growth of native species such as the Quenual and other wild plants essential for the region's ecological balance.
Awareness and participation of local communities in conservation and sustainability practices, creating an environment conducive to long-term project development.
Strengthening of social and environmental responsibility among the local population and volunteers, generating ongoing commitment to environmental protection.
VR Foundation’s project seeks to generate profound change in the relationship between high Andean communities and their natural environment, promoting respect for green areas and biodiversity. Through collaboration with key actors such as SERNANP and Huascarán National Park, as well as direct involvement of communities and volunteers, we can prevent indiscriminate burning, restore affected ecosystems, and ensure the sustainability of the Cordillera Blanca for future generations.
